Mode 7 freaks, get ready: Nintendo has unveiled the Super NES Classic Edition, a miniature version of the beloved SNES in the vein of the NES Classic Edition that everyone wanted and few people were able to actually buy.
The system will come with 21 games, including many of the titles that made the SNES famous. Built into the system is Zelda: A Link to the Past (widely considered the best Zelda in the 30-year-old series, at least arguably before Breath of the Wild on the Switch). It also includes some of my favorite games from back when I was in college, like F-Zero, the pack-in Super Mario World, Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting, Super Castlevania IV, and Contra III: The Alien Wars, plus all-time classics like Super Metroid and Mega Man X.
I'll admit I'm disappointed that Super Smash TV isn't included, as that was one of my top 5 games for that system at least. But I'm sure we're all going to have some favorite or other that's missing from this, and maybe it'll end up hackable like the NES Classic Edition was.
Interestingly, the Super NES Classic Edition will also include Star Fox 2, a never-before-released game that's a sequel to the popular original. That first Star Fox game contained an extra coprocessor in the cartridge called Super FX that boosted what the SNES was capable of natively, something I imagine won't be necessary this time around. Not that I remember that launch in 1993 in extreme detail or anything.
The Super NES Classic Edition will come with two wired SNES controllers that appear almost identical to the originals. The system will supposedly be available for $79.99 on September 29th. I say "supposedly" because what actually happens then is anyone's guess, given the debacle the first time around with the NES Classic Edition.
For an alternative viewpoint, read Joel Hruska's Think Twice Before Getting Excited for Nintendo's Upcoming SNES. He's probably right. But I admit I'm going to try and buy one this time after missing out on the first go-around. A sucker and his money (or at least time) are soon parted… As for whether I'll bust the top edge L and R buttons on another series of controllers while playing Street Fighter II Turbo, I guess we'll soon see.
Update 2:58pm: Nintendo confirmed to Kotaku that the company plans to ship more Super NES Classic Editions than it did the original NES version, albeit for just three months:
We aren't providing specific numbers, but we will produce significantly more units of Super NES Classic Edition than we did of NES Classic Edition.
Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition is currently planned to ship from Sept. 29 until the end of calendar year 2017. At this time, we have nothing to announce regarding any possible shipments beyond this year.
Our long-term efforts are focused on delivering great games for the Nintendo Switch system and continuing to build momentum for that platform, as well as serving the more than 63 million owners of Nintendo 3DS family systems. We are offering Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition in special recognition of the fans who show tremendous interest our classic content.
